Past, Present & Future: Bridgerton Meets Outlander

Past, Present and Future   What begins as a first date at the Jane Austen Festival in Bath takes a startling turn when Sophie and Ryan are thrust more than 200 years into the past. Suddenly stranded in Regency England, they must scramble to find food, clothing, and shelter while learning to pass as members of polite society—all while searching for a way back home. Their predicament grows more complicated when they realize the blood oath that carried them into the past can only be broken if a mysterious death is avenged. With few options, they’re forced to hide in an empty house, recently vacated by the late Lady Trowbridge, and hope that they can find a way home before its rightful owner, Lord Trowbridge, returns from India. Can they solve a centuries-old mystery and undo the oath before they’re discovered and cast out—or trapped in the past forever? This was my second true attempt at writing a novel that eventually was published (the first being It Happened One Flight, which chang...

On the Topic of Names

In addition to this writing hobby, I read a lot.  I read 137 books last year, and 20 so far this year.  I know I'm a little behind the pace if I want to read over 100, but I'll get caught up when I'm on a few long flights and trips this summer. Strange things can sometimes come up in a search history, and the least innocuous is "Popular Names of people born in 1940." Why is this on my mind, you ask? While writing, I try to find names that suit the characters.  Sometimes, yes, the bad guy gets a name from someone in my past (bwa-ha-ha!).  Or the hero gets a name from someone I admire.  Although, more often than not, I make the character like someone I love and give them a different name.  Sometimes the story is much more...ahem...exciting than real life. Imagine writing about your bestie getting it on with her boss in an elevator...awkward! Naming those characters requires just a little bit of forethought.  The characters I create are mostly people in t...

Lycan Society: Where it all began

Image
I mentioned in my earlier post that I began writing werewolf novels because after reading a novel with a vampire lover, I realized that I was Team Jacob.  I couldn't imagine getting busy an ice cold...well, you know.  BRR! I much prefer warm and snuggly over cold and dead.  But hey, that's just me. Inspired by that, I asked myself how a Lycan/werewolf story would go, and my imagination took off.   It began with the idea that twin brothers, Michael and Mitchell, who were living in Portland, Oregon a few years after the pandemic.  The Discovery had already been made and many Lycan were struggling with discrimination, so many people of Lycan ancestry were still living in secret.   Rival packs stir up trouble while Michael reveals something about Mitchell's long-time girlfriend, leading to a betrayal that could tear them apart. Published May 31, 2024.  464 pages ASIN ‏ : ‎  B0D5PK7Q8T  https://a.co/d/0e866bGA The second book in the seri...

It Happened One Flight

Image
Another stand-alone romance, this novel is one that explores forced proximity, small town, celebrity status, and a little touch of ESP. While she was at University, 1500 miles from home, Matilda got the bad news that her Gran had passed away just a couple weeks before the Christmas holidays. With little money to travel home, she raced to the airport to try to get back to Minnesota as quickly and as cheaply as possible. An unexpected upgrade threw her into the path she never anticipated. After days of enduring his grueling schedule, actor-singer-songwriter-entertainer legend Jason Lander found that his charter flight was grounded due to mechanical issues and forced to take a domestic flight to Minneapolis from Seattle. He boarded the late-night flight and ended up sitting next to a beautiful University student who did was almost no one did--treated him like a regular guy. Grabbing a cab together, they found themselves trapped in the blizzard of the century on her family's homestead ...

The Ninth Circle

Image
As St. Patrick's Day is today, I present to you the most recent published stand-alone novel, The Ninth Circle.  It embraces the themes of second chance, why choose, and a bit of spice! This story is LOOSELY (and I mean really loosely) based on Dante's Inferno, in that I borrowed heavily on the character names and their attributes, but it is a modern story based in the south side of Chicago.  Many of the characters are of Irish descent, and they hang out at a place called O'Doran's Pub.   Dante owned the most notorious club in the South Chicago area. The speakeasy on the first floor was a popular bar and restaurant with prohibition-themed drinks and specials. The second floor had a strip club. The third through fifth floors...well, things just got spicier. Once a year, they hosted an auction, and this was the 4th annual. It was already expected to be a huge hit, until candidate number 8 walked on stage. He knew her. He saved her life six years before. And he had...

A Blog or a Newsletter?

Dearest Gentle Reader-- Just kidding. Hello! I wondered what the difference was between publishing on a blog, or writing what authors are now calling a newsletter?  It seems to amount to the same thing.  So I will begin my author blog here and call it a newsletter.   A Blewsletter.  A Newsblog.   Whatever we call it, I decided that after hitting the 'submit' button more than two dozen times on Kindle Direct Publishing, I figured it was about time to create a blog to keep you up to date on what I'm doing on the writing front.  I don't know if I'll publish something once a week or once a month, or only when I release a new novel.  Time will tell.  And maybe it'll change over time. For the last several months, I have been posting on the Facebook page (which you can find here:  https://www.facebook.com/kaylee.patterson.219375/ ) but if you're not ON Facebook, then this is another option to follow me for updates. I will create a post her...
