Past, Present & Future: Bridgerton Meets Outlander
Past, Present and Future
What begins as a first date at the Jane Austen Festival in Bath takes a startling turn when Sophie and Ryan are thrust more than 200 years into the past. Suddenly stranded in Regency England, they must scramble to find food, clothing, and shelter while learning to pass as members of polite society—all while searching for a way back home.
Their predicament grows more complicated when they realize the blood oath that carried them into the past can only be broken if a mysterious death is avenged. With few options, they’re forced to hide in an empty house, recently vacated by the late Lady Trowbridge, and hope that they can find a way home before its rightful owner, Lord Trowbridge, returns from India.
Can they solve a centuries-old mystery and undo the oath before they’re discovered and cast out—or trapped in the past forever?
This was my second true attempt at writing a novel that eventually was published (the first being It Happened One Flight, which changed names and had a massive overhaul from first draft to publication, and was published a couple years later).
It started with watching Outlander--and reading the books because I often find the books are MUCH better than the film adaptation. See also: Bridgerton. I had enjoyed the books but when the series came out on Netflix, I had several deep criticisms with the different direction the writers had taken it.
But I was watching Outlander and I had asked myself,
"What would happen if I were sent back 200 years in time?"
Well, I wouldn't have ended up in the era of Culloden and the Jacobean Uprising. No, 200 years back from the time I wrote it would have been the Regency era.
Luckily, thanks to Bridgerton, that era was getting a huge number of readers! I had a lot of resources to reference to explore that idea.
I read quite a few books to also get a feel for the lifestyle. I also looked at a number of websites and Google searches and tried to come up with as accurate a representation of that era as possible if modern people were thrown back in time wearing costumes made for that time.
The result, I think, is a fun trip back in time where the past meets the future and decisions must be made--do you stay or go?
Also, as a fun fact, I imagined that I was Sophia--the short brunette--and my bestie was Eleanor, my fun-loving, tea-drinking, tall companion-in-crime.
Sound like a good read? It's available on Kindle Unlimited or in paperback.
Happy reading!
